| Why did you choose Barnard? |
There were so many ways in which
I was already involved in the types of discourse
on campus. Visiting the campus highlighted those for
me, so Barnard was an instinctive choice. |
| Favorite things in Morningside Heights |
The quiet and calm, in relation to
other parts of the city |
| Favorite things in New York City |
How vibrant the city is and the chance
I have to explore all my passions without wandering
too far; jazz; poetry; food; theatre; art and culture. |
| Favorite class |
Philosophy and Feminism , taught
by Professor Christia Mercer. I never leave that class
uninspired, a new fact about my status as a woman
is revealed to me each session. Also I have a deep
passion for women's issues and philosophy as a whole. |
| Favorite professor |
Christia Mercer is very insightful
and is not afraid to be very frank with her students even if that requires sometimes
being slightly unorthodox. I think her students appreciate
her more for that. |

| Why did you choose Barnard? |
I always wanted to go to a liberal
arts school. When I was in the middle of my college
search I came across Barnard College and immediately liked its setting.
I thought, I will be in one
of the most dynamic cities in the world but at the
same time in a small community -- and that is exactly
what I got. At Barnard I have the benefit of being
in a small liberal arts school but I also I have open
access to the wonderful resources at Columbia
University. I
truly get the best of both worlds. For me, it is the
perfect setting. |
| Favorite things in Morningside Heights |
Apart from the Columbia University
campus, I would say the Hungarian Pastry Shop is up
at the top of my list as well as all
the other restaurants we have that serve food from
so many different places in the world. |
| Favorite things in New York City |
Being in NYC you can really do anything
that you want. You can truly be yourself and no one
will mind. Personally, I love going to see Broadway
shows, exploring around different cafes but mostly
just getting on a subway with a bunch of friends and
doing things spontaneously. I am in New York City; that is what it is about! |
| Favorite class |
Until now my favourite class is probably
Psychology. It is something that I am truly interested
in. The topics that we cover make me want to learn
more. |
| Most interesting person you've met
at Barnard |
Doris Miller in the College Activities
Office. She always greets me so warmly and she has
fascinating stories to tell. I love going there and
just saying 'hi,' because I always walk
out so much more cheerful and happy. |

| Why did you choose Barnard? |
I chose Barnard because it allows
me to experience the best of both worlds. I get to
be a part of the exclusive Barnard family where I
have met the most amazing,
multi-talented women from all backgrounds. At the
same time have access to the faculty, courses and
facilities at Columbia University.
The best part however is that I am studying and living
in the Big Apple, which is a cosmopolitan hub of the
world! |

| Why did you choose Barnard? |
Very simple. We get the best of both
worlds -- a small, close-knit community in the middle
of a vibrant city like New York,
affiliated with the wondrous Columbia University. As a women's liberal arts
college, we are cared for and at the same time given
the opportunity to stand on our own feet. |
| Favorite things in Morningside Heights |
My favorite thing about our neighborhood
is the caring feeling, because everything in the area-from
clothing stores to grocery stores -- is there for
Barnard and Columbia students. |
| Favorite things in New York City |
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Times Square, the beautiful and peaceful parks, the cruise
around the Statue of Liberty, Comedy clubs. Also,
the fast-paced atmosphere. I have yet to see someone
walking slowly and casually down the street! |

| Why did you choose Barnard? |
The intimate atmosphere and emphasis
on writing, in conjunction with the vast
possibilities and famous professors across the street.
And, of course, because of the city. |
| Favorite things in Morningside Heights |
The farmers' market; Samad's Deli;
Riverside
Park; my roof. |
| Favorite things in New York City |
All the free outdoor events during
the summer (movies and concerts by the river,
Shakespeare plays and operas in the park); interacting
with people on a regular basis with whom I share no
common language, the work/internship opportunities, Brooklyn's Park Slope
neighborhood. |
| Favorite class |
Of course I love all the classes
that have to do with my majors, but one of the best
classes I have taken so far was 20th Century Urbanization
from a Comparative Perspective. If you want to understand
the US
better than most Americans do and learn more about
cities around the world, this is the class.
(A point not to be underestimated is that most of
the homework involves playing SimCity.) |
| Most interesting person you've met
at Barnard |
In the beginning I had a lot of friends
who were also international students. I learned a
lot from them and I'm still very close with them,
but now I have learned that the people with the most
mono-lingual and mono-cultural, apparently
conventional or boring biographies are often most
interesting people you'll meet. Believe it or not, some of the
people that fascinate me most here are from the Midwest. |
| Favorite professor |
Professor Zainab Bahrani. She is
the coolest, most cosmopolitan feminist art historian
you'll ever meet. When the war in Iraq
had just started and the National
Museum was looted, she went back to her home country
(she was born in Baghdad)
and saved some of the most precious pieces of early human civilization.
I only listened to her lecture a few times in my Intro
to Art History class, but her research and ideas (and adventurous
UN missions!) have really shaped me academically. |

| Why did you choose Barnard? |
I chose Barnard because I was looking
for a small liberal arts college in New York City. Barnard appealed to me because of its ability
to provide an intimate classroom experience with the
resources of a larger university.
I was also intrigued by Barnard's renowned
professors and its strength in the academic fields
I was specifically interested in pursuing.
Also, I've spent most of my life in large cities
and knew I wanted to be in New
York, so Barnard was an ideal
fit for me! |
| Favorite things in Morningside Heights |
I love the farmers' market and being
close to the park in the fall.
I'm also a fan of the food at Nussbaum and Wu, a local deli/bakery. |
| Favorite things in New York City |
I love all that the city has to
offer from its exotic restaurants to hundreds
of museums. One of my favorite things about the city
is being able walk everywhere and explore
the city at random. I am also very fond of the various film festivals,
such as the Tribeca Film Festival, that take place
throughout the year. |
