The 1883 Memorial to Columbia College Board of Trustees

The petition or “Giant Memorial” as it was called by Annie Nathan Meyer was signed by 1,410 persons who supported the idea of allowing female students to attend lectures and examinations at Columbia College. Presented to the Columbia College Board of Trustees in February of 1883, the Giant Memorial served as proof that many progressive citizens of New York favored the idea of post-secondary co-education, already established elsewhere in the United States.

Through this interactive site, you can observe a portion of the original Memorial in detail and browse short biographies of notable signatories accompanied by their portraits.

Scrapbooks (Coming Soon)

A number of alumnae have donated their college scrapbooks to the Archives. These contain old photographs, programs for college plays and musicals, reviews of Broadway shows, and clippings about Barnard from the daily press; as well as the notices, invitations, and programs created for teas, receptions, concerts, lectures, and dances. The majority date from before the Second World War.
