Faculty and Staff:  Forwarding Email

                               


To forward your Barnard mail to another e-mail account, telnet into bc.barnard.columbia.edu with a secure program 
ssh://bc.barnard.edu   

Log in with your email name and password.

At the $ prompt, type "pico .forward" as shown below:

$ pico .forward

Hit enter

In the blank space, type the e-mail address to which you'd like your Barnard e-mail forwarded, such as:          

yourusername@aol.com

Hit Ctrl-X and respond to the default messages at the bottom.

"Save modified buffer ... ?"

Hit Y

"File name to write : [.forward]"

Hit Enter

To keep a copy of incoming emails in your Barnard inbox in addition to forwarding to another address, 
at the $ prompt,  type this instead:

echo "\BCID, you@forwardingaddress.com" > .forward

  • where "BCID" is replaced by your Barnard email login ID.
  • where you@youraddress.com is replaced by the address you want to forward your mail to. 

Hit enter

To unforward your e-mail, telnet into BC:  ssh://bc.barnard.edu   

At the $ prompt, type:

$ rm .forward

Hit enter

You will begin to receive e-mail in your Barnard inbox again.
