My staff will be moving to a new office.  Who can help us with our computers?

Several Barnard departments are involved.  Here's the procedure:

  1. Users should back up all important files now before the move begins. Each user should attach a label (with last name) to the monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU and surge protector of his/her workstation.  Also label all printers and scanners.
  2. As soon as the project is scheduled, call the Help Desk (x4-7172) to make an appointment for Academic Technologies to assist you in disconnecting electrical power and network cables.  At the same time, set up a date with AT for the hardware re-installation.
  3. The Purchasing Department unlocks the security cables attached to the computers. Call them (x4-5204) to make an appointment to have this done. At the same time, schedule a subsequent appointment to have your computer resecured in its new location. .
  4. The Facilities Project Manager arranges for Facilities staff to move the hardware and cables. They will place the computers on each desk in the new offices.
  5. Academic Technologies will then reattach network and power cables and test the computers. (If you did not previously make an appointment with AT - see Step 2 above - call as soon as you know when your computer will be in its new location.) The users must be present for the testing.
  6. Purchasing relocks the security cables. (See Step 3.)

Can I purchase a computer or software and be reimbursed by the College?

No, you can't buy a computer (or printer or software)  and expect to be reimbursed. You need to go through our Purchasing Dept. to obtain educational discounts and avoid sales tax.

My computer is too slow.  How can I upgrade the memory?

Please talk to us first.   It may not be cost effective to upgrade an ancient machine. We may have a computer available for exchange.   These FTUs (Field Tested Units) are reconfigured in our labs and distributed to faculty and staff.
