Technical support for Home computers

Academic Technologies provides limited on-site software support for your one private computer that is used for Barnard-related work at home.    Because of limited staff we operate within these guidelines:

 

Self Help:

  • We strongly recommend that you install Symantec Antivirus software on the computer that you use at home for Barnard work.

  • We will help you to identify computer service companies in your neighborhood.  We can not vouch for their abilities.

  • Columbia recommends an Outside Paid Service: Techs in a Sec

Home visits:

  • We can not make home visits.

  • On occasion, students working in our department may be available to assist you at home.  The going rate for these students is $15 to $20 per hour.  While these students are experienced and well-trained, we can not guarantee that they will be able to solve a particular problem. 

Software Installations:

  • These are done by appointment.   Peak times in the AT department include: August 15 - October 15, January 2 - March 15.  It is difficult to schedule appointments during these weeks.  

  • We do not have enough staff to provide drop in or same day service.

  • You must deliver the computer to the Lehman Computer Center. For a desktop computer, you do not need to bring your monitor or keyboard since we can connect to peripherals in our repair area.  We will take great care of your computer - but we do not have a high security storage area.

  • The computer must meet these minimum standards: 512 MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive, functioning CD-ROM drive, network card.

  • You must back up all data, images, documents before you bring your computer to us.

  • You must bring your original installation disks for your operating system.

  • Under our current contracts, we can install the following software on your one private computer:

    • Microsoft Office 

    • Symantec AntiVirus software

Troubleshooting hardware problems

  • If your Dell computer is under warranty, we can inspect it and advise you about explaining the problem to the Dell technician.

  • We have little expertise with non-Dell computers.  We suggest you use the service company recommended by the manufacturer.  

Limitations

  • We can not:

    • assist you with more than one home computer

    • lend you discs to install Microsoft Office or upgrade your operating system

    • troubleshoot problems related to the Vista operating system

    • install other software packages

    • undertake hardware modifications for your computer (i.e. installation of additional hard drives)

    • repair printers or scanners

To schedule service, call the Help Desk at x4-7172.  We will create a ticket and review your request.  Once authorized by the Director, we will call you to schedule an appointment.   Before coming to the Lehman Computer Center:
