Graduate Assistant

Function
|
The
Academic Technologies Graduate Assistant serves as the evening/weekend manager
for the department, supervises campus computer labs during evenings and
weekends, and handles logistics for the student training sessions. Some of the duties of the
GA include answering the Help Desk phone and voicemail, creating tickets,
generating reports, providing user support via phone and in
person, fielding questions from student employees, monitoring computer labs and
assisting students in the labs.

Qualifications
|
Qualified
candidates will have technical skills in the following areas:
Microsoft Office products, email programs and printer support. Enrollment as a graduate student in an
accredited college or university is preferred.
|

Terms
|
The term of employment begins August 1 and ends May 31. Hours vary from
an average of 17 hours per week during the academic semester to 30
hours at the beginning of the semester. The Graduate Assistants average 17 hours a week (alternating
22 hours / 12 hours); GAs split the operating hours, file schedule with
the Associate Director, and cover absences for one another.

Hiring process
|
AT informs HR about the new hires
or renewals. HR arranges for stipend payments, College ID,
email account, UNI, printing pages.
|

Mail
|
Packages and mail is delivered to
the apartment building's front desk.
Be
sure to leave forwarding address when leaving.
The GAs also have a departmental
mailbox on 2nd floor of Library.

|
Phone
/ IM
|
Each
GA has a Centrex phone in apt. Obtains PIN # from College
Office. We
will reimburse for business calls. These should be rare since
most calls will be made from the Lehman Computer Center.
GAs
will be available on IM while on duty.
|
|
Meetings
|
Weekly meeting with the Associate Director
to
review technical issues, priorities and communication.
|
|
Housing
|
Private
studio apartment for each GA; Receive key Aug 1 –
return May 31
GAs
are expected to vacate their apartments at the end of their term of
employment.
Extended housing possible
(but not guaranteed) in June and July in exchange for working 15 hours a week.
Telephone
not included; Electricity
included
The
Landlord's furniture can not be removed from the
apartment.
The GA is not permitted to
duplicate keys.
Laundry
area in basement.
No
air conditioner.

Stipend
|
$3000
paid in 10 installments of $300. First check is received
at the end of August.

Duties
|
Work location:
Based at the Help Desk
area, the GA monitors the LCC / West Wing and inspects the satellite
labs in the Quad and 616.
Supervise
operation of the Lehman Computer Center on weekends and evenings.

Mon
- Thurs: Be in the LCC from 6 p.m. to
midnight.

Saturday: Open the LCC at noon, be in the LCC until closing
at 5 p.m.

Sunday:
Be in the LCC at
from 4 p.m. until closing
at 9 p.m. (LCC will be opened at 1 p.m. by Senior Student)
The
LCC supervision is critical. The Graduate Assistants must
be willing and able to cover these hours.
In the event that both GAs are ill, other full time AT staff will
need to cover these hours.

Answer HD phone including voice
mail (unless needed in LCC to cover for absent ACE).

Create Help Trac tickets for all.

Read
Help email and create tickets including text of email.

Call
back staff and faculty users as appropriate.

Assign
new student tickets to "MEGN".

Supervise
ACEs in the labs.
-
Assist in student timesheet
procedure.

Remind
students to fill out
on-line lab reports when they visit the labs.

Handle
special printing exemptions.

Monitor problems in the remote
labs. Walk
through the labs in the quad and 616.

GA
is available to deal with irate, disgruntled users in the LCC.

Verify that door to Help Desk
area is locked when you leave. This is a high security area and
the door should never be open when not staffed. ACEs students should be advised that they can not leave the LCC
area unattended.

Verify that door
between the LCC and the West Wing is locked when you leave.

Student
employees refer problems to the GA. GA provides procedural support to
ACEs in resolving computer problems, both on
the phone and in the LCC and WW.

Expectations
|
The Gas are part of the staff team and
are expected to
support all policies of Academic Technologies at Barnard College.
Customer service is the primary concern of the department.
The
College prohibits the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of
illicit drugs and alcohol by students, faculty members, or staff
members while on College property or while participating in College
sponsored activities or conducting College business off-premises.
In additional, the College no-smoking policy varies by building.

|
Will be evaluated by
Associate Director in November and May, or as requested by Director.

Renewal
|
This contract
may be
renewed annually depending on evaluation
