Academic Technologies
Moving computers to a new (or temporary) location

My staff will be moving to a new office.  Who can help us with our computers?

The department head should identify a staff member as coordinator for this project.
Several Barnard departments are involved in an office move. Here's the procedure:

  1. Users should back up all important files now before the move begins.  If users need training about copying files to a CD or USB key, please call the Help Desk.  You do not need to back up files that are on Athena.
  2. Each user should attach a label (with last name) to the monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU and surge protector of his/her workstation.  Also label all printers and scanners.
  3. As soon as the project is scheduled, call the Help Desk (x4-7172. or email help @ barnard.edu) to make an appointment for Academic Technologies to assist you in disconnecting electrical power and network cables.  At the same time, set up a date with AT for the hardware re-installation.  The coordinator should give AT a list of the staff members who will be moving to the new space.
  4. The Purchasing Department unlocks the security cables attached to the computers. Call them (x4-5204) to make an appointment to have this done. At the same time, schedule a subsequent appointment to have your computer re-secured in its new location. .
  5. The Facilities Project Manager arranges for Facilities staff to move the hardware and cables on the scheduled date. They will place the computers on each desk in the new offices.
  6. Academic Technologies will then re-attach network and power cables and test the computers. (If you did not previously make an appointment with AT - see Step 2 above - call as soon as you know when your computer will be in its new location.) The users must be present for the testing.
  7. Purchasing relocks the security cables. (See Step 3.)
