Welcome to Barnard Computing!

Overview of services: Fall 2007

HELP DESK: This is the first line of user support for faculty and staff. In many cases, your problem will be resolved over the telephone. Otherwise your request is entered as a "ticket" in the Help Trac database.

Barnard email accounts: Barnard Faculty receive an email account with 500MB of storage space. The user name for this account consists of your first initial and last name up to eight characters. This information, including a temporary password, is provided to you by the Provost's Office. You can access this account from the Webmail link on the College website or by going directly to http://webmail.barnard.edu/.

eBear: The Barnard College intranet is located at http://ebear.barnard.edu. eBear provides access to online services including Instructor Online and Adviser Online. Use your Barnard email account username and password to log into eBear.

Artemis: The College provides a server named Artemis that you can use to store your documents. You have an individual account on this server with 150MB of storage space where you can save copies of your scholarly writings, course materials, correspondence, etc.  A department-wide folder is also available to allow you to share files with colleagues. Both folders are backed up daily.

Columbia University Network ID (UNI) account and Columbia email account: Your UNI, a combination of your initials plus four numbers, is your username for accessing computer services and electronic resources at Barnard and Columbia, e.g. CourseWorks and library resources from off-campus. To activate your UNI and choose a password, go to http://uni.columbia.edu/. Barnard faculty also receive a Columbia email account with at least 250MB of storage space. Use your UNI and password to log on.

CourseWorks: This is a web based course management system used by the entire university. It provides tools for developing a course web site and managing its content. Using CourseWorks, faculty can publish a syllabus, send messages to students, conduct online discussions and provide their students with access to various kinds of files. Many other features are also available. For more information on CourseWorks, see http://www.barnard.columbia.edu/edtech/courseworks.html

Anti-Virus: Barnard has a site license for Symantec AntiVirus and this program should already be on your computer. It has been configured to perform virus scans at specific times. You can continue working on your computer while the virus scan is in progress. Barnard's license allows you to install this program on your home computer through the Columbia site: http://www.columbia.edu/acis/software/nav/.

Vista operating system: In agreement with other IT groups at Columbia, Academic Technologies is not yet supporting Vista for use on campus. We will continue to purchase College computers with Windows XP. Our Microsoft Campus Agreement allows us to upgrade the operating system when we are ready.

Microsoft Office 2007: Currently, Office 2003 is installed on Barnard staff computers. We expect that many students will create documents in Word 2007 and send these to professors who are using Word 2003. You may need the Microsoft compatibility pack to allow you to read the newer format. Please call the Help Desk for assistance with this.

Wireless Coverage on the Barnard Campus:   You can connect to the guest wireless network on the Lehman lawn, in the Quad and outside of Milbank.  Two residence halls have secure wireless networks: Elliott and Sulzberger.  There are local wireless installations in specific classrooms and public spaces. For more details and a map see: http://www.barnard.edu/acs/wireless_coverage.html.

Online Course Catalog:  The official (and searchable) Barnard course catalog is at http://www.barnard.edu/catalog/depts/index.php.

Training: Training is available upon request for Microsoft Office Programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FrontPage, and skills like File Management and Scanning. We also provide training for some programs that you may need to use to prepare your work for publication, for example Adobe Photoshop.  Please advise us of your publisher's requirements so that we can advise you about software tools and available training.
