Why do I have a quota? Your email is stored on a server named "BC" which supports email for all Faculty and Staff. We need to control the amount of data on this server in order to make it possible to run the backup efficiently every evening. MINS sends email reports to users when they exceed their limits on BC. Why do I need to take action now? If you exceed the storage limit on this server, you will not receive new email messages. You will be able to read the messages that are already in your Inbox - but new messages are held in storage until you are back under the quota. How can I fix this immediate problem? There are several options:
What should I do to avoid this in the future?

Subject Alert! Your Barnard Mailbox is Almost Full
Dear Barnard Colleague,
Your email account is approaching your space limit for messages stored on our server. If your account exceeds your space limit, you will be unable to receive new email messages until you move or delete some of the messages in your account.
There are several options to fix this immediate problem:
Log into your account via Webmail. Find your Trash folder and purge those messages.
Open your email with any program (Webmail, Thunderbird, Outlook, Pine, Eudora)). Delete messages that you do not need.
Sort your inbox by size of message. (Easy to do this in Pine and Thunderbird). Move large messages to a local folder on your hard drive.
Review your sentmail folder. You may be storing copies of messages with large attachments. Delete messages that you do not need.
The quota on your BC account includes your personal web site and files that you place there via secure file transfer. You can free up space by deleting any of these files that are outdated.
Please read the explanation at http://www.barnard.columbia.edu/at/OverQuota.htm for more information.
As always, you can call the Help Desk (x4-7172) for assistance in identifying unneeded files and messages.
