The Department Head can request "High Security" configurations for the most important computers in the department.  Academic Technologies make the following adjustments to each machine:

• Custom install Windows XP users: limited rights (to help protect from accidental installation of viruses attached to email messages)

• Assist each user to select secure password (mixture of letters and special characters)

• Activate strict firewall

• restrict remote access to this computer

The Department Head should send an email to help@barnard.edu with the following information for each Supreme PC:

• location of computer

• brand and model (e.g. Dell Optiplex 260)

• list of authorized users

The Help Desk will call to arrange a convenient appointment for this security upgrade.

These machines are candidates for High Security configuration:

• computer has access to confidential data: SSNs, financial reports, medical information, personnel records

• more that one person has access to this computer: shared staff computer, student employee workstation

Other considerations:

• back up routine for this computer if information is stored on this hard drive

• assign staff member to run these programs every two weeks; Pest Patrol, SpyBot, Adaware
