Academic Technologies
Summer Programs 2007

Use of the Barnard Library

 General Computing Information

Academic Technologies will provide limited assistance in connecting to the network as follows:

  1. We will provide in room connection support for desktops for  HEOP,  ICP, Liberty,  PCP, and  STEP students as possible.
  2. Options for other residents:
    1. We will provide free printed guides on connecting to the network through our DHCP server. This should work easily for most users.
    2. Guests who bring desk top computers to campus need to be self sufficient.
    3. Visitors must keep their personal computers secure by following the Mandatory Computer Setup Guidelines.
    4. Summer Residents who need assistance in connecting a laptop to the campus network can purchase a Connection Contract for their laptops.  These contracts cost $35 and are sold between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Lehman Computer Center.  This entitles the holder to bring a laptop to the Lehman Computer Center where a technician will configure the laptop for the Barnard network.  In the event that a particular laptop can not be successfully connected to the campus network, the fee will be refunded.
    5. The following categories are exempt from the connection fee:  Current Barnard students, faculty, staff.  Current undergraduate Columbia students in College, Engineering, General Studies.  Students and staff in Barnard programs:  HEOP, ICP, Liberty,  PCP, and  STEP
    6. Connection Contract Form
    7. Connection Contract Receipt
  3. Visitors in residence in Plimpton Hall and Cathedral Gardens are not eligible for Connection Contracts - please see http://www.barnard.columbia.edu/at/VisitorsInResidence.html

Here is what Academic Technologies thinks will happen in the summer of 2007:

GENERAL
The Plimpton and 616 halls are closed and therefore we will not support computer labs in these buildings.  This means that the 616 lab will not be available for class sessions.
We will support the two computer labs in the Quad: Sulzberger and Brooks. The printers in these labs are metered.
See info about the student computer labs at http://www.barnard.edu/resnet/labs.html
We  have "hotel guests" in Plimpton Hall and Cathedral Gardens this year.  See http://www.barnard.columbia.edu/at/VisitorsInResidence.html .
A number of Barnard students will be in the residence halls.  These students have UNIs and a printing allowance (printing pages.)
We will schedule our student employees to check these labs once each evening to restock paper in the printers.  Student support in the evenings is an ongoing expense to Acad Tech.
The Lehman Computer Center and the West Wing will be open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 (excepting  July 4, Monday,  Independence Day ).
The Hughes lab in 401 Altschul has 23 computers and an un-metered printer.

HEOP (25 students)
HEOP students have UNIs and 100 printing pages a week.
We can set up a small HEOP lab with several loaner computers and one network printer.  HEOP will identify a room in Sulzberger with many network jacks.   If yes,  HEOP will assist us in scheduling Facilities to move the machines to the room and then back to our storage space.
We would like to repeat last year's arrangement to meet with these students on their first day to assist them in opening email accounts and to answer any computing questions.
Please call to schedule time for us to inspect your laptop collection.

PCP (300 students)
Pre College students  need UNIs so they can print in the labs.
Students will have access to online library resources from computers on the Barnard campus.

ICP  (16 students)
These students have Barnard email acocounts, UNIs and 100 printing pages a week.
We can open  401 Altschul in the evenings if needed.  No staff.  ICP responsible for security.

LIBERTY ( 12 students)  and STEP (15 students)
These daytime students do not have UNIs and therefore can not print in the labs.  You may want to reserve some time in the Hughes lab.

STEP will use the small Math computer lab in Milbank. Primarily Internet research.12:30  - 2 PM Monday - Thursday - July 11 - August 1.  Susan Campbell will unlock / lock.

CONFERENCE ATTENDEES
We will provide the "secret password" so they can use the computers in Sulzberger and Brooks for web-based email and Internet browsing.
Printing needs will be handled by the staff of Special Events in their own offices.
