LAB 6-DISTILLATION OVERVIEW: 1. Preheat the heating mantle without a flask and cool it for 5 minutes. 2. Place a magnetic stir bar in a 50 mL RB flask and transfer 30 mL of a 1:1 mixture of ethyl acetate and 1-butanol into this RB flask. 3. Assemble the distillation apparatus. 4. Start heating by setting the variac to 80 volts. 5. Record the temperature when the first drop of distillate is collected in graduate cylinder 1. Record the temperature after each mL is collected. 6. Switch to the second graduate cylinder when the temperature has risen 5 degrees above the observed boiling point of ethyl acetate. 7. Switch to the third graduate cylinder when the temperature is 5 degrees below the boiling point of 1-butanol. Continue recording as before. 8. Stop heating when a total of 26 mL of the distillate has been collected. 9. Determine the refractive index of all three fractions.
