Frequently Asked Sophomore Questions

Who is a Sophomore?

A sophomore is a student who has completed 24- 51 points.

What are the main Sophomore Year tasks?

1. Choose a major adviser.

2. Declare a major.

3. Complete the sophomore audit form.

How To Prepare to Meet the Tasks for This Year

1. Take as many different types of courses as you can.

2. Take care of any lingering transfer credit or incomplete course work in a timely manner.

3. Take time to talk with various faculty members and ask them about their research interests and projects.

4. Take advantage of volunteer and paid internship opportunities.

5. Take advantage of study abroad information sessions which are given in late September and January. When you are ready to plan your study abroad experience schedule a meeting with Dean Gretchen Young, the Study Abroad Adviser.

6. Meet with the Sophomore Class Dean if you would like to discuss the possibility of a combined or self-designed major.

How to Declare Your Major

1. Pick up a major declaration form from the Registrar’s Office.

2. Meet with your current adviser to review your degree progress and satisfaction of requirements. Most sophomores find this meeting quite satisfying. It shows you where you are at the midpoint in your undergraduate career and allows you to have any final questions answered by your original adviser. At the end of this meeting, your adviser will sign off on the form.

3. Bring your form to obtain the signature of the relevant department chair for the academic area of your interest.

4. File completed form with the Office of the Registrar.
