Eligibility & financial aid

Eligibility

The Faculty has set the following guidelines for eligibility. Students should:

    a) have completed two years (or the equivalent at the college level) of the language of the host country, provided the language is offered at Barnard or Columbia, regardless of the language of instruction; OR have completed one year (or the equivalent at the college level) of the language of the host country and enroll in a program with a mandatory home stay or with an intensive language program at the start of the semester. For students studying the sciences or mathematics abroad, language requirements vary slightly. When the language of the host country is not offered at Barnard or Columbia, students should have some knowledge of that language but it is not required.

    b) have a plan for completing major and general education requirements for the degree;

    c) have no outstanding incompletes;

    d) be in good academic standing;

    e) have worked out, in consultation with the major and study abroad advisers, a plan for the completion of all major and college requirements for graduation.
FINANCING STUDY ABROAD

Barnard students are charged Barnard tuition, an annual study abroad assistance fee, and the off-campus comprehensive fee (which includes health insurance and the class fee).

Once you have resolved Barnard's bill in full Barnard will pay the full tuition amount charged by the study abroad program you will be attending. For charges other than tuition, including the program deposit, you are responsible for payment directly to the other institution. Payment of your Barnard charges is due by August 1 for the fall term and December 1 for the spring term.

Barnard College financial aid is fully portable if a student attends any of Barnard's approved programs. For more information on financial aid for study abroad, go to: http://www.barnard.edu/finaid/study-abroad.html.
