Pregnancy Testing
If you suspect pregnancy but haven't yet had a test, don't assume
you are definitely pregnant. If your period is more than a few days late, we can
check for pregnancy with a urine test.
The test used in Health Services detects a pregnancy hormone in
your urine, is 99% accurate and can be done while you wait. There is no charge
for this test. If you prefer, you can test yourself with a home pregnancy test
which you can buy at the local drugstore.
If you chose to be tested at Student Health Services you will be
asked to give a urine sample, the results can be read in minutes. If a negative
result is obtained but pregnancy is suspected, the urine test needs to be
repeated 3 days later with a first morning specimen. If a negative result is
again obtained, you may be asked to return to Health Services for a repeat
test. Use condoms and spermicide during
this time of uncertainty.
If the test determines you are pregnant, you need to consider the
options available to you, either abortion or
continuation of the pregnancy, either for yourself or for adoption. Think
through the various possibilities and what they would mean to you. Talking with
people you think will be supportive can be helpful.
Counseling Services
(4-2092) offers individual counseling to help guide you through your decision or
assist you in dealing with whatever feelings or issues that may arise as a
result of your decision. Remember, whatever choice you make should be yours
and no one else's.
If you decide to continue with the pregnancy we can refer you to
obstetrical services and give you insurance information.
If at any point you might consider adoption, we can refer you to
some excellent resources which include counseling.
If your choice is to have an
abortion, we can give you a list of facilities that perform both
medical and surgical
abortions.
