The Development Office offers an exceptional opportunity for a committed, skilled events professional to work on high profile events that benefit a world-class leader in education for women.  The Manager will produce both on-campus and off-campus events to recognize existing donors and cultivate new ones. Responsibilities will include the full range of event management including budgeting, vendor coordination, registrations, catering, facility management, and print material design and production. In addition, this individual will collaborate on a broad spectrum of events as appropriate to create donor recognition opportunities.

COUNSELOR

Department:  HEOP Scholars

Under the supervision of the Program's Director, the Counselor will provide various program services for the HEOP Scholars that include but is not limited to academic and personal advisement, and also providing general office administrative support.  S/he will assess the eligibility of prospective program participants and assist with recruitment activities at designated secondary high schools and college fairs.  The Counselor will also provide career advising, personal counseling, coordinate HEOP peer-mentoring, and assist in providing developmental workshops for HEOP and assigned non-HEOP students.  The Counselor will compile data and assist in the overall accurate and timely completion of New York State Education Department and Barnard College reports.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two (2) years related experience with a demonstrated interest in counseling education, student personnel, or a related field.  Sensitivity to the concerns of students from diverse and low income backgrounds is critical to success.  S/he should have a familiarity with New York State and federal financial aid guidelines as they relate to the goals and objectives of opportunity programs in the private sector.  The ideal candidate must be able to work and travel on evenings, overnight and on weekends as necessary.

PART-TIME RESEARCH ANALYST

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR/LIGHTING DESIGNER

The Dance department is currently seeking a Technical Director/Lighting Designer that will supervise the technical aspects of all productions whether at Barnard College/Columbia University, off-campus throughout the city, or elsewhere.  S/he will execute the lighting designs for all productions in conjunction with members of the Dance department and outside contractors as necessary.  The Director will also coordinate the maintenance, repair, and use of all department facilities with numerous departments, students, and faculty.  S/he will serve as the Technical Director for all major productions, as well as workshops and showcases, and special dance events during the school year.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree with experience lighting design and technical direction in an academic setting.  Excellent interpersonal and communications skills especially with students, faculty, guest artists and theatrical professionals are critical to success.  S/he should also have expertise with current theatrical design software, including Vectorworks and Lightwrite.   The ideal candidate must be willing to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

DIRECTOR OF REUNION GIVING

Under the general supervision of the Vice President for Development and Alumnae Affairs, but exercising a high degree of autonomy, the Director of Reunion Giving will develop and implement a program that will maximize raised donations and participation in Barnard’s quinquennial reunions. Responsibilities include vigorous volunteer recruitment and the coordination of volunteer involvement in cases for which staff will have a primary responsibility.  The Director will also act as active support of reunion gift chairs and committee members, including management and contact with members regarding their assignment progress.   S/he will initiate and oversee the solicitation and closure of reunion gifts in partnership with major and annual giving officers and reunion gift volunteers, and the creation and implementation of creative strategies that will maximize giving to the College's highest priorities in reunion years.  The Director will also monitor and ensure the partnering of key volunteers with key prospects.

The successful candidate should have six (6) or more years of fundraising experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.  Excellent interpersonal and communications skills especially with alumnae volunteers and colleagues, organizational efficiency, and the ability to manage multiple ongoing projects are critical to success.  The ideal candidate must be willing to work evenings and weekends as necessary.  A bachelor’s degree is required along with a proficiency using Microsoft Office and planned giving tools.

SENIOR ADMISSIONS OFFICER

The Admissions office seeks a Senior Admissions Officer reporting to the Dean of Admissions.  The individual will coordinate international recruitment, including developing and implementing recruitment strategies worldwide and travel in specific geographic regions. The individual will also work with international alumnae and international student volunteers on-campus. General admissions responsibilities will include promoting the College to prospective students and their families and interpreting the admissions policies and procedures, conducting interviews and information sessions, planning and coordinating high school outreach programs, and participating in application review and selection.

Qualifications

At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree from a liberal arts institution and previous experience in selective college or university admissions, educational advising or relevant experience, preferably 3 or more years is required.  Master’s degree strongly preferred. Excellent oral/written communication, highly developed organizational skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, as well as computer literacy are also required. Knowledge of world educational systems as well as an understanding of the values of a liberal arts education for women and the ability to articulate these values effectively is essential. Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends at certain times of the year.

VICE PRESIDENT, INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, The Vice President for Information Systems provides leadership for the development and operation of academic computing, administrative computing, networking services, telecommunication services, and end-user support.  Working collaboratively with other members of the senior administration, the Vice President is responsible for identifying opportunities for improvement and efficiencies; developing and enforcing computer policies and practices; and overseeing computer training programs for a variety of end users. 

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of current trends and best practices for the use of technology in a college or university environment.   A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is required with a Master’s preferred. Ten years of relevant experience in a broad spectrum of computer and/or IT operations with experience managing an IT department with a diverse technical staff.  Excellent communication skills are essential, particularly with a variety of audiences, including students, faculty and staff.  Experience in higher education IT management is preferred.

DIRECTOR, ATHENA CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP STUDIES

FUNCTION:  Reporting to the Provost and working closely with the President, the Director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies will develop, manage, implement, and assess visionary programs designed to advance the theory and practice of leadership studies from the distinctive platform of a liberal arts college devoted to women. The Director will oversee the examination of leadership from a range of disciplines, interdisciplinary areas and cultures and will steward examination of the relationship of leadership to class, gender and historical context.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assume responsibility for developing and implementing a cohesive leadership studies curriculum for Barnard students, working collaboratively with a faculty advisory group, career services, department chairs and program directors, and other interested faculty. 

  2. Oversee an internship program with focus on leadership in a broad spectrum of fields including but not limited to philanthropy, the arts, politics, science and medicine, and business and entrepreneurship. 

  3. Develop and teach capstone seminar devoted to the intellectual inquiry of gender and leadership.

  4. Oversee selection of Athena Fellows.

  5. Coordinate practicum workshops which will be required of Athena Fellows but open to the entire Barnard Community to teach several practical elements of leadership including negotiation, public speaking, financial literacy, ethical leadership and resilience.  Recruit topical experts to teach practicum workshops.

  6. Develop and implement specialized summer (or other short term) programs on women's leadership and leadership skills for other populations of students and alumnae.

  7. Develop outreach and marketing materials and methodologies for the center.

  8. Responsible for all reporting, budgeting, evaluation and administrative oversight related to center activities.

  9. Represent the Provost and the President as necessary within the College, University, New York City, and higher education community as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree appropriate to the position; 3 or more years of experience in higher education or higher education administration strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated professional expertise and scholarship in the areas of leadership and gender studies.

  • College level teaching experience.

  • Exceptional communication, presentation and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to effectively recruit for and market the Athena Program to a wide variety of audiences including  students, faculty, donors, trustees, for-profit and not-for-profit businesses, and to the broader university and higher education community.

  • Appropriate office and general management capabilities including strong computing, analytical, organizational and budgeting skills.

  • Ability to multitask and absorb detail while maintaining vision and establishing priorities.

  • Familiarity with and commitment to the value of liberal arts colleges for women and the advancement of women in leadership.

  • Utmost discretion in dealing with confidential information.

  • Ability to be flexible and work both independently and cooperatively.

  • Ability and willingness to travel and work outside of regular business hours as required

The Career Development department is seeking an Employer Relations Coordinator to assume the responsibility of employer affairs, recruitment, and activities that are associated with employment events and programs. Reporting to the Director of the department, the Coordinator will develop and maintain employer relationships that expand the range of recruiting activities for jobs and internships for Barnard students and alumnae.  S/he will also supervise the dissemination of information and the operational procedures that will ensure a clear understanding of policies and obligations by both students and employers.  The Coordinator is required to stay informed of national, state, and local hiring practices and also with technology that relates to the recruitment process.  In addition, the Coordinator will serve as a representative of the College to corporations, non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies for the express purpose of employment opportunities and participation. 

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree (or one in progress) in Business or Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education with 2 to 3 years of counseling, teaching, advising, or related experience.  Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills, especially the ability to work well with the public, are required.  Strong interpersonal and computer skills are also necessary.
