The 2000 award
from HHMI included funds to hire a half-time "Information
Technologist," who would assist Barnard science faculty in
the development of course web pages, web-based resources, and
other technological innovations for their classes. Pankaj Singh
has assisted all science faculty in the development of web pages
for their courses and focused on several projects in the Biology
Department.
Over the past three
years Pankaj has devoted a substantial portion of his time to
working with Science faculty to develop new web-based
applications for their courses. During this reporting period,
Pankaj has successfully implemented a Web-based database
management application for Professor Hilary Callahan's Plant
Evolution Lab. This is a very complex database application
which helps students to register on the website, add, edit,
delete (some allowed) data. The instructor can manage the class
data through the web interface, override student entries, reset
information and perform other administrative functions from the
comfort of their home or office.
Pankaj also created
a Lab Data Management System, an online data management program
that allows the input, analysis, storage, and display of group
data for several experiments in Professor Paul Hertz’s Ecology
Lab. The URL for this project is: http://www.barnard.columbia.edu/edtech/labonline/eco1.html.
As the GIS Administrator for the College, Pankaj manages the
installation, deployment, and administration of ArcGIS on the
campus. He also setup and installed a GIS (Geographic
Information System) Server on all the PCs in a new “GIS ready”
classroom which is now being used by the Environmental Science
department.
