Reference Books

Encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference books can provide useful background and factual information. They can also provide bibliographies that lead you to relevant books and articles.  The reference books in this list are available in the Barnard Library reference area on the second floor.

CLIO: the online catalog

You can enter CLIO from the Barnard Library home page or from the Columbia University LibraryWEB.
CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981.  Use the card catalogs for older materials.   There are two search interfaces, the Web version and the Telnet version. CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword. Help for searching CLIO is available on the Web CLIO opening screen. Click on: "Connect via WWW". When you click on the CLIO link you will also be provided links for "comparing Telnet CLIO and Web CLIO" and a "Quick Guide to Searching Telnet CLIO". Some sample CLIO searches:

Searchable E-journal collections:

JSTOR. Searchable E-journal collection of full text of articles from periodicals, excludes current issues. History journals include Hispanic American Historical Review, Journal of Latin American Studies, and Latin American Perspectives. Political Science, Sociology and other subject areas are included.

Project Muse. Searchable E-journal collection of full text of articles from periodicals, includes current issues only. Interdisciplinary, includes Hispanic American Historical Review, Journal of Women's History and Ethnohistory. Primarily humanities and social science journals.

News Sources

Lexis Nexis. Mid nineteen eighties to present. Interdisciplinary database of over 1,800 sources including full text articles from newspapers, wire services, and other sources.

E-News. Included in this section are MEDIALink and Online Newspapers. Both of these links have current Latin American newspapers listed by region and/or country.

Please note that Union Theological Seminary, Jewish Theological Seminary, and the Law Library’s holdings are not listed in CLIO and that they have their own online library catalogs. CATNYP is the online catalog of the NYPL research library. These are alphabetically listed in the Databases (Online Reference Works & Indexes) list or see below.

Pegasus. The online catalog of the CU Law School Library. Library includes major foreign language collections, e.g. the legal literature of Germany, France and Italy.

Sophia. The online catalog of Union Theological Seminary Library.

CATNYP. The online catalog of the NYPL Research Libraries.

Interlibrary Loan & Union Catalogs

Union Catalogs are useful for finding materials located at other libraries which are not available at BC or  CU and which you can obtain on Interlibrary Loan. To order an item through Interlibrary Loan click on "Request It" on the Barnard or Columbia University Library home page or on previous highlighted Interlibrary Loan link. You may then request an item electronically. You may also make a request in person at the Interlibrary Loan office in 307 Butler.
