Reference Books

Encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference books can provide useful background and factual information. They can also provide bibliographies that lead you to relevant books and articles. The reference books in this list are available in the Barnard Library reference area on the second floor. Please ask at the reference desk for help in finding additional reference books.

CLIO: the online catalog

You can enter CLIO from the Barnard Library home page or from the Columbia University LibraryWebCLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981.  Use the card catalogs for older materials.  When you click on the CLIO link you will be prompted to "connect via www". On the opening CLIO screen you will be provided with basic searching tips as well as the option to click on advanced searching tips. CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword.

Databases: for locating articles & secondary sources

MLA Bibliography: from 1963 to present; most comprehensive database in literature and language; includes journal articles, articles in books, and dissertations. Citations only.

Humanities Abstracts: from 1984 to the present; a general humanities database which includes literature as well as history, religion, art etc.  Citations only.

LION: Literature Online: English language literature database. Includes citations from ABELL (American Bibliography of Language and Literature) from 1920 to present. Some full text articles.

Women’s Studies International
: 1972 to present; an interdisciplinary women’s studies database which includes journals from various fields of study. Suggest using advanced search.  Citations only.

ProQuest Direct: interdisciplinary database which includes some full text articles.   Select scholarly journals by clicking on PA Research II Periodicals and PA Research II--Peer Reviewed and then click on continue at top or bottom of page.  Some literature journals are included. n.b. There is also a separate back file with citations from 1986 to 1998.

Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index:
Indexes journal articles, book reviews, and essays in books about women, sexuality and gender during the Middle Ages. Citations with links to some full-text articles.

Iter: 1859 to present. A database of interdisciplinary journals pertaining to the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Citations only. On CD at Butler.

 

Full Text Databases

JSTOR: Searchable collection of journals; full text; from vol. 1 but excludes last 3-5 years. Interdisciplinary and contains journals such as ELH (English Language History), MLN (Modern Language Notes) Speculum, Renaissance Quarterly, Yale French Studies and more. These journals are also listed in CLIO.

Project Muse: Searchable collection of journals full text; includes current years only.  Contains journals such as ELH (English Language History), MLN (Modern Language Notes), Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies and more.

Union Catalogs & ILL

Union catalogs are helpful for finding materials located at other libraries. They are also helpful for Interlibrary Loan.  To order an item on Interlibrary Loan click on "Request It" on the Barnard or Columbia University library home page. Then click on "Interlibrary Loan".  You may then request an item electronically.  You may also make a request in person at the Interlibrary Loan office in 307 Butler.
