CLIO: the Library Catalog

CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for the Barnard and Columbia Libraries. CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword.  Help for searching CLIO is available on every CLIO screen: click on the Help button at the top. 

• You can enter CLIO from the Barnard Library home page or from the Columbia University Libraries Home Page
• Search tips are available on the bottom of the opening search screen
• The holdings of the Health Sciences Library as well as Union Theological Seminary are included in CLIO
• The Law Library's catalog is Pegasus, Teacher's College catalog is Educat and JTS' catalog is Aleph
• To search CLIO, Pegasus and Educat simultaneously, click on the "Search all CU catalogs" button, available on every CLIO screen
• Primary sources can also be found in CLIO. For example, select the subject search and type: hellman lillian
  note the subheadings under hellman lillian:

Sample Searches:
Title search: leave off the initial article (the, an, la, le etc.)

Author search: put last name, then first name

Finding a book about a person or a subject: start with a Keyword Search using the most distinctive words associated with the topic. Then look for useful subject headings and do a Subject Search.

Keyword search: use and, or not between the terms, or quotes for a phrase, and use ? for truncation (to find variant endings of a word)
 jew? and "buenos aires"
 jew? and immigra? and (paris or france)
 "jewish immigrants"

• keyword searches search various parts of the library screen/record for those words

• use most distinctive words

• try multiple searches

Limiting to books in Barnard Library: use the Pre-Set options or use the Post Limit option after the search is completed; available with keyword and title searches only.

Note that although the Barnard Library is in Lehman Hall, CLIO location Lehman means the Social Sciences library at Columbia; Barnard books have the location Barnard.

Core social sciences, includes history, demography, foreign affairs, international relations, psychology and social issues. Includes international journals. Citations and some links to full-text, 1951 to present.

JSTOR: the Scholarly Archive 
JSTOR means journal storage and is a large group of more than 600 journals in many disciplines including history. It has the full text of the journal beginning from volume 1 up to the last 3-5 years. It is searchable as a whole or by journal title or subject area. History journals include Journal of Modern History, Renaissance Quarterly, Journal of the History of Ideas and more. Political Science, Sociology and other subject areas are included.
Useful for finding both primary or secondary articles.

Project Muse
Searchable E-journal collection of full text of articles from periodicals, includes current issues only. Interdisciplinary, includes Journal of Social History, Journal of World History and many other journals. Primarily humanities and social science journals.

British Humanities Index
indexes articles, excluding reviews, in more than 320 humanities journals, magazines, and newspapers published in the UK, 1962 to present.

Index to Jewish Periodicals
Indexing to English-language articles, book reviews, and feature stories in more than 160 journals devoted to Jewish affairs. Journal coverage dates back as far as 1988.

International Bibliography of Periodical Literature (IBZ)
International and interdisciplinary bibliography of academic periodical literature in the humanities and social sciences. Primarily European sources, published from 1983 to present.

Royal Historical Society Bibliography
Database containing 350,000 records on British and Irish history.

Sociological Abstracts
Abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. The database provides citations from 1963 to the present to journal articles, book reviews, books, book chapters, dissertations, and conference proceedings.

CLIO: the library catalog
Columbia University has a collection of newspapers. Search CLIO using the journal title search option, e.g. monde to find Le Monde newspaper.

19th Century Newspapers
Searchable databse containing digital facsimile images of 19th century U.S. newspapers. Includes numerous newspapers from a range or urban and rural region throughout the U.S.

Jewish Studied Internet Resources
From Columbia University Libraries.
