CLIO: the Library Catalog
CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for the Barnard and Columbia Libraries. CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword.  Help for searching CLIO is available on every CLIO screen: click on the Help button at the top. 

  • You can enter CLIO from the Barnard Library home page or from the Columbia University Libraries Home Page
  • Search tips are available on the bottom of the opening search screen
  • The holdings of the Health Sciences Library as well as Union Theological Seminary are included in CLIO
  • The Law Library's catalog is Pegasus,Teacher's College catalog is Educat and JTS' catalog is Aleph
  • To search CLIO, Pegasus and Educat simultaneously, click on the "Search all CU catalogs" button, available on every CLIO screen

Sample Searches:
Title search
: type in as much as you know of the title:
title: encyclopedia of public health               journal title: journal of nutrition
                                                                      

Author search
: put last name, then first name
author: freud sigmund

Finding a book about a person or a subject: start with a Keyword Search using the most distinctive words associated with the topic. Then look for useful subject headings and do a Subject Search.

Keyword search: use  quotes for a phrase, and use ? for truncation (to find variant endings of a word)
keyword: female athlet?
keyword: "women athletes"
keyword: vegetarian diet

  • keyword searches search various parts of the library screen/record for those words

  • use most distinctive words & try multiple searches

  • find subject headings from the results of your keyword searches

Subject search: use Library of Congress (LC) subject headings
subject: alternative medicine
subject: acupuncture
 
Limiting to books in Barnard Library: use the Pre-Set Limit or Post Limit option; available with keyword and title searches only

Note that although the Barnard Library is in Lehman Hall, CLIO location Lehman means the Social Sciences library at Columbia; Barnard books have the location Barnard.

Article First
Citations and abstracts for articles in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, humanities, and popular culture periodicals.

Bio Med Central
Provides access to the full text of biomedical research publications. These publications include biology and medicine journal articles, current reports, and meeting abstracts.

General Science Full Text
Covers leading journals and magazines, conferences, review articles in science publications.

MEDLINE: Ovid
Index of the biomedical literature.

Medline Plus: from the National Library of Medicine
MEDLINE databases plus additional medical and health information.

PsycARTICLES
Full-text articles from 57 journals published by the American Psychological Association.

PsychINFO
Citations and abstracts for publications about psychology and related disciplines, 1806 to present.

PubMed
Citations, abstracts and links to some full text articles. Indexed by the National Library of Medicine. Also links to other specialist databases.

Science Citation Index: ISI Web of Knowledge
Provides access to the Science citation index expanded from 1900 to the present.

WebMD
A source for  health and medical news and information.
