Finding Books

For Barnard and Columbia libraries including Health Sciences and Union Theological Seminary, use CLIO to find books, journals, links to online journals, and other materials.
       If searching for a known item, start with a title search: it's best to leave off initial articles (the, der, un, etc.).
       If not searching for a known item, start with a keyword search using terms relating to your topic
       For a keyword search, use quotes for a phrase, and ? for truncation (to find variant endings of a word).
       Or search by author, authorized Library of Congress subject, ISBN, etc.

       For primary documents, search for sources, archives, interviews, correspondence,
       To limit to books in Barnard Library, use the Pre-Select Limits or Post Limits options.
       Use BorrowDirect to request books that are not at Columbia or checked out, from partner libraries
       Use Interlibrary Loan to request books and articles from libraries all over the world - can take a few weeks.

EastView Universal Databases
This database provides full text in-depth information from Russia and the former Soviet Union. Resources include newspapers, newswires, popular and scholarly periodicals, and government documents.

ISI Emerging Markets
Contains excellent coverage of current news from across Russia and the newly independent states, alongside the rest of the developing world, in English, with particular emphasis on business, industry and financial news and analysis.  The Russian section also includes the Kodeks Law Database for searching Russian laws.

Lexis-Nexis Academic
Full-text of many major newspapers from the U.S. and around the world, magazines, journals, and newsletters, broadcast transcripts from the major television and radio networks, and non-English language news sources. For European newspapers, click on Major World Publications (non-English).

ProQuest
Online journal articles and citations, as well as the full text of the New York Times from 1851 to the present.

World News Connection
An index with links to full text translations of newspaper articles, conference proceedings, radio and television broadcasts, periodicals, non-classified technical reports and local media sources from around the world. Specializes in socioeconomic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events. Covers 1994 to the present.

Scholarly and Secondary Literature

ABSEES
The American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (ABSEES) indexes  North American scholarship on East-Central Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet Union. The bibliography contains records for journal articles, books and book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, online resources, and selected government publications from 1986 to the present.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index
Multidisciplinary database covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities.

ATLAreligion
Citations to journal articles, essays in multi-author works, and book reviews in the field of religion.

Central and Eastern European Online Library
CEEOL is an online archive which provides access to full text articles from 332 humanities and social science journals and re-digitized documents pertaining to Central, Eastern and South-Eastern European topics.

Historical Abstracts
Citations for articles covering the history of the world (excluding the United States and Canada) from 1450 to the present, with the ability to specify a historical period for a search.

Humanities Full Text
Citations and abstracts for articles in all the humanities, 1984-present.

JSTOR
Full-text articles from many scholarly journals, from the first issue of each journal (including some started in the nineteenth century) up to 3 to 5 years ago; no current articles.

MLA Bibliography
Modern Languages Association bibliographical citations to articles, books and dissertations in many languages on literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore.

Periodicals Index Online
A database of millions of article citations published in the arts, humanities and social sciences, across more than 300 years.

Project Muse
Full-text articles from scholarly journals published by university presses in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.

ProQuest Digital Dissertations
Citations and abstracts for dissertations and theses covering all academic subjects at American universities since 1861, with full text since 1997.

Europa World Plus
The online version of the Europa World Year Book and the nine-volume Europa Regional Surveys of the World series, which covers political and economic information in more than 250 countries and territories.

International Bibliography of the Social Sciences
Provides access to citations and abstracts to over 2,600 scholarly journals in the social sciences, from 1951 to the present.
