The
Barnard Center for Research on Women Presents The Scholar
and the Feminist XXVIII - Feminist Analyses of the
State of the World, Feb. 22
New
York, NY The Barnard Center for Research on Women
will host the 28th annual
The Scholar and the Feminist Conference, on Saturday, Feb.
22. The conference, titled Why? Feminist Analyses of
the State of the World, continues the Centers
work of theorizing and strategizing ways to bring peace
and justice to an increasingly fractured world. It will
be held in the Julius S. Held Lecture Hall, Barnard Hall
(117th Street and Broadway) and registration will start
at 8:30 a.m. in the Barnard Hall lobby.
The conference will address the possible U.S. invasion of
Iraq, global capitalism, the U.S. refusal to participate
in the Kyoto Treaty, the global spread of terrorism and
violence, and the UN Conference Against Racism in Durban.
The morning panel will include political scientists Neta
Crawford and Meredeth Turshen, who will discuss international
militarism and the consequences of the quest for oil in
Africa, while Lois Lorentzen, Professor of Social Ethics
at the University of San Francisco, addresses the effects
of military campaigns on the environment. Lisa Dugan, Assistant
Professor of American Studies at New York University, will
consider the roles that sexuality and gender play in our
increasingly militaristic world.
The afternoon panel will draw from the morning session analyses
to present new ways to think about the inequities of global
economics, strategies for securing human rights and protecting
our environment, as well as vital and effective models for
social action. It features such activists as Annie Brisibe,
President of Niger Delta Women for Justice; Cherie Honkala,
Executive Director of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union;
Winona LaDuke, Advocate for Environmental Justice from a
Native American perspective; and Kate Rhee, Director of
the Brooklyn-based Prison Moratorium Project.
Lunchtime workshops with a wide range of social justice
organizations will help conference participants put theory
into action.
