Barnard to Host Major Summit on Women’s Health on April 5
Advance Seating May be Purchased Beginning Saturday, February 1

On April 5, Barnard will convene a day-long summit on campus with some of the most influential and thoughtful women of our time to explore changing attitudes toward women’s health issues and global women’s health trends. Moderated by Barnard President Judith Shapiro, ABC News correspondent Lynn Sherr and NBC Weekend Today co-anchor Soledad O'Brien, the Barnard Summit: Women and Health will bring together important writers, scientists, doctors, historians, journalists, policymakers and activists, including Our Bodies, Ourselves co-author Judy Norsigian, Gates Foundation HIV-AIDS Director Dr. Helene Gayle, New York Times science writer Gina Kolata, National Institutes of Health women’s health director Dr. Vivian Pinn, Ob-Gyn, author and NBC and PBS medical contributor Dr. Judith Reichman, Director of the Food and Drug Administration Office of Women's Health Dr. Susan F Wood, bestselling Prozac Nation author Elizabeth Wurtzel, and Dr. Cristina Beato, principal deputy secretary for health to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, among others.

In addition to an exploration of the major health trends among women of all ages, how gender affects diagnosis and treatment and the social and the public policy implications of new technologies and treatments, the Summit will address the larger question of how social change impacts women’s health and how women’s health itself acts as a barometer for society’s well-being.

The event, which takes place in the LeFrak Gymnasium from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M., will involve three panel discussions:
• current health trends among women
• whether hospitals, the health care profession and medical researchers are serving women’s needs and
• the relevance of women’s health internationally to sustainable development and global stability and security.
