Attallah
Shabazz, Daughter of Malcolm X, Reflects on the
Life of Her Father, at Barnard College, Feb. 18
New
York, N.Y.-- Attallah Shabazz, the oldest daughter
of Malcolm X, will speak at Barnard College, at
2 p.m., Sunday, Feb.18, in the LeFrak Gymnasium,
Barnard Hall, Broadway at 117th Street. Shabazz's
talk, titled Malcolm X Shabazz: The Man and
the Father Away from the Podium, will commemorate
Malcolm X's last public speech, which took place
at Barnard on Feb.18, 1965. Shabazz, speaking
in the same room where her father stood three
days before his assassination, will talk about
her father's life and work as a fighter for civil
rights and as a private person.
Reflections
on Malcolm X's life and work will also be offered
by Professor Manning Marable, Director of the
Institute for Research and African-American Studies
at Columbia University.
On
Feb. 18, 1965, Malcolm X delivered a speech at
Barnard, titled "The Black Revolution and its
Effects on the Negro of the Western Hemisphere".
He asserted that he would "rather be dead than
have somebody deprive him of his rights" and stated
that "we are living in an era of revolution, and
the revolt of the American Negro is part of the
rebellion against the oppression and colonialism
which has characterized this era."
Shabazz
is a noted film producer, writer, lecturer, motivational
speaker, and director. With Yolanda King, the
daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., she co-founded
Nucleus, a motivational theater group. Shabazz
is currently the president of Prism International,
which works to build understanding between cultural
groups.
The
Shabazz talk is organized by the Office of Multicultural
Affairs in celebration of Black History Month.
The event is free of charge and open to the public;
however, tickets are required for seating.
