Barnard College Honors Black History Month with Celebration of Black Womanhood Week, Feb. 23 – Mar. 5
Keynote by Spelman College President Beverly Tatum

New York, NY, February 11, 2003 – Spelman College President Beverly Tatum will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Black History Month event series, which honors the 75th anniversary of Zora Neale Hurston’s graduation from Barnard as the school’s first black graduate and the recent death of the renowned poet June Jordan ‘57.

Organized by the Black Organization of Soul Sisters (BOSS) at Barnard and Columbia, the week-long series celebrates the legacies of black women in higher education, featuring a keynote address by Beverly Tatum, President of Spelman College, as the main highlight. President Tatum, author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?, will discuss the history and future of black women in higher education, Wednesday, March 5, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the James Room, Barnard Hall, 117th Street & Broadway.

Among other featured events are a Black Alumnae Brunch in commemoration of poet, activist and educator June Jordan, a lecture by Professor Monica Miller of the Barnard English Department reviewing the new scholarship on Zora Neale Hurston’s life and work, and a student production of Alice Childress’ play Wine in the Wilderness.

Celebration of Black Womanhood Week is organized by Barnard student co-chairs Elvita Dominique ’03 and Naomi Fink ’03. The committee also includes Lois Bonsu ’03, Emanuelle St. Jean ’04, Salima Jones '03, Rachel Harris '03 and Alexis Gumbs '03.
