Womanhood Week At Barnard

York, NYThe Celebration of Black Womanhood Week
at Barnard kicks off February 29th through March 6th with
a series of events centered around the theme of "Images
of Women of Color Around the World." The highlight of
the week will be a keynote address by Lori S. Robinson, an
award-winning journalist, on March 2nd at 6 p.m. in the James
Room, 4th floor of Barnard Hall.
Robinsons work has appeared in the Washington Post,
The Crisis, Essence and The Source, among other
publications. Robinson was a former editor at Emerge: Black
Americas News Magazine. Her honors include awards
from the National Association of Black Journalists, Unity
Award in Media prizes, and the International Black Women's
Congress Inspirational Award.
Robinson is also the author of I Will Survive, a self-help
book for women and men survivors of sexual assault and childhood
sexual abuse. Robinson will explore processes of emotional,
physical, sexual, and spiritual healing for victims and survivors
of sexual assault, and examine why black women are more likely
to become victims of sexual crimes. Dinner and a book signing
will follow the discussion. The event is free and open to
the public.

events celebrating Black Womanhood Week include:
- "Black
Alumnae Brunch:" Sunday, February 29th at 11:30 a.m.
in Sulzberger Parlor, 3rd floor Barnard Hall. A panel of
alumnae and current students will discuss their experiences
at Barnard.
- "Dinner
and a Movie:" Wednesday, March 3rd at 8 p.m. in the
Zora Neale Hurston Lounge, Hewitt Hall. Dinner will be served
along with a viewing of the movie Whats Love Got to
Do With It?, followed by a discussion about the portrayal
of women.
- "Body
Imaging:" Friday, March 5th at 3 p.m. in the Zora Neale
Hurston Lounge. Well Woman peer educators will lead a discussion
on why and how women of color view themselves. Refreshments
will be served.
- "Fusion:"
Saturday, March 6th at 10 p.m. at Lerner Party Space, Lerner
Hall, at Columbia University. $2 with CUID, $3 without CUID.
Proceeds will go to the Liberty Partnership Program and
the Double Discovery Center. The Celebration of Black Womanhood
Week is co-sponsored by the Alumni Association of Barnard
College, Black Organization of Soul Sisters, Caribbean Students
Association, Barnard Center for Research on Women, College
Activities Office, Dean of the College, Dean for Community
Development, Rosemary Furman Counseling Center, HEOP Scholars
Program, Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program, Office
for Multicultural Affairs, Pan-African Studies Program,
Office of the President, Office of Special Events Services,
Barnard/ Columbia Rape Crisis/ Antiviolence Support Center,
the Student Government Association, Take Back the Night,
and Well Woman.
