TELEVISION PROGRAM ON THE 2003 BARNARD SUMMIT AIRS ON STATIONS NATIONWIDE

Public television stations nationwide this month begin airing a special program, The Barnard Summit: Women and Health, that was produced at this influential forum on the Barnard campus in spring 2003.

The program highlights segments from the daylong forum last April 5 that was led by President Judith Shapiro and featured a Who's Who of international medical specialists, writers, researchers, advocates and policymakers.

Connecticut Public Television produced the forum for television and the program will air during March, Women's History Month, on stations in major cities, including San Francisco, Detroit and the Washington, D.C. area.

The forum addressed women's health trends worldwide, including the latest thinking on gender-specific diseases, changing attitudes toward health care for women and the relevance of women's health to economic progress in the developing world.

The Barnard Summit is a leadership initiative of President Shapiro on women's progress and achievement worldwide. The first Summit was held in the fall of 2001.

In addition to President Shapiro, two national television correspondents served as moderators of discussion during the Summit:  ABC News "20/20" correspondent Lynn Sherr and CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien. The Summit brought together a distinguished group of writers, scientists, doctors, historians, journalists, policymakers and activists, including Our Bodies, Ourselves co-author Judy Norsigian, Gates Foundation HIV-AIDS Director Dr. Helene Gayle, New York Times science writer Gina Kolata, National Institutes of Health women's health director Dr. Vivian Pinn, Ob-Gyn, author and NBC and PBS medical contributor Dr. Judith Reichman, Director of the Food and Drug Administration Office of Women's Health Dr. Susan F Wood, bestselling Prozac Nation author Elizabeth Wurtzel, and Dr. Cristina Beato, principal deputy secretary for health to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, among others.
