Sonia Nieto Presents What Keeps Teachers Going? (In Spite
of Everything), March 6
New
York, N.Y., March 4, 2003Sonia Nieto will discuss her
new book What Keeps Teachers Going? (In Spite of Everything),
an exploration of how committed teachers persist in the face
of daunting obstacles. The event takes place at Barnard College
on March 6, 5:30 p.m. in the Julius S. Held Auditorium of
Barnard Hall (117th St. & Broadway).
Sonia Nieto, a Professor of Education at the University of
Massachusetts, is known for research on multicultural education
and Puerto Rican childrens literature. Her books include
Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural
Education, The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural
Learning Communities and Puerto Rican Students in U.S.
Schools. She has also published numerous book chapters
and articles in The Harvard Educational Review, The
Educational Forum, Multicultural Education, and
Theory into Practice.
Nieto serves on several national advisory boards that focus
on educational equity and social justice, and she has received
many awards for her advocacy and activism, including the Human
and Civil Rights Award from the Massachusetts Teachers Association,
the Drylongso Award for Anti-Racism Activism, the Multicultural
Educator of the Year Award, and the New England Educator of
the Year Award.
The lecture is part of The Issues in Education Lecture Series,
sponsored by the Barnard College Education Program, Teachers
College, and Columbia University. A reception hosted by the
