Barnard
to Host "Expanding Your Horizons" Conference for
Seventh Grade Girls
On
Sat., March 13, Barnard College will host a conference called
"Expanding Your Horizons in Science, Math and Technology."
The meeting is designed for seventh grade girls from New York
City and Westchester to get a hands-on introduction to career
opportunities for women available in science, math and engineering.
The conference is being presented by the American Association
of University Women, New York City and Westchester branches,
with Barnard as its partner.
"Barnard is very pleased to be able to support the excellent
work of AAUW in attracting girls to the excitement of science
and math," said Provost Elizabeth Boylan. "As a
biologist myself, I am happy when girls start imagining new
futures for themselves."
This is the first time this event will be held in the Greater
New York City area. Last year over 28,000 girls attended EYH
Conferences around the country. So far, more than 150 seventh
grade girls along with parents, teachers and counselors
have signed up for the conference at Barnard.
"Women's colleges like Barnard have a strong tradition
in graduating women in science and math, and I hope that some
of the girls who attend this event will end up as a science
or math major at Barnard," Boylan said.
Dr. Diane Herrick, Senior Scientist at NexPress Solutions,
LLC, will welcome the girls and also conduct one of the hands-on
workshops being offered.
Each girl will choose two workshops out of a dozen or more
being offered by women in math, science or technology related
fields. Workshops will include: "Bringing Down the Walls,"
teaching students how to design and build a catapult, presented
by Dawna Schultz, Pre-College Education Coordinator of American
Society of Engineers; "What's Itching You?" learning
to test for asthma and allergies by Dr. Christine Fusillo,
Chief of Allergy Medicine, Westchester Medical Center; and
"Smart Teenagers Finish Rich" by Maria Ellis, MBA,
President, Financial Services of America, Inc.
Educators and parents at the conference will see a screening
of "Tech Savvy Girls," a video produced by AAUW.
They will also have their own hands-on workshop and participate
in a discussion with experts in the field on how to help girls
achieve career goals in science, technology and math.
The fee for the conference is $10 per attendee, which includes
registration, refreshments, pizza lunch and a campus tour
after the conference. For more information visit the website:
