Barnard to Host Two Science Seminars for High School Girls

Barnard College will host two programs for high school girls, the S3 Program, also known as the Saturday Science Seminars, and a conference called "Expanding Your Horizons in Science, Math and Technology." Both series are designed to bring together high school girls interested in furthering their interest in the sciences.

The Saturday Science Seminars were held on Feb. 5 and Feb. 19 and will continue on March 5, March 19 and March 26. The seminars--intended for 11 th graders who exhibit strong academic abilities and who are fascinated by the sciences--feature Barnard professors teaching science at the college level, as well as interactive explorations of academic subjects.

Some highlights of the program include:

  •   A class on "The Mathematics of Card Shuffling," offered by Professor of Mathematics David A. Bayer
  •   "Seashells All Around Us," by Environmental Science Senior Lecturer Peter Bower
  • Chemistry Assistant Professor Linda Doerrer will lead "Question Your Chemical Assumptions"
  • Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy Reshmi Mukherjee probes the "Mysteries of the Universe"
  • A discussion on the "Merits and Marvels of Microbes," led by Biological Sciences Professor Jeanne S. Poindexter

On Saturday, March 12, 2005, Barnard College will host for the second straight year the "Expanding Your Horizons" conference billed as a hands-on exploration of careers for 7 th grade girls in New York City and Westchester County. The conference is organized by Barnard College along with the American Association of University Women New York City and Westchester Branches.

The schedule of events includes a keynote address by Dr. Diane Herrick, Adjunct Lecturer in Physics, SUNY Geneseo in which she encourages girls to persist in mathematics and science courses. Each girl will choose two workshops out of a dozen offerings. In most of the workshops, young women participate in hands-on learning experiences led by women scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. In other workshops, role models share career awareness information and discuss job satisfactions, necessary education, and descriptions of a typical day on the job.

Examples of workshops offered this year include: "Smart Teenagers Finish Rich," led by Maria L. Ellis, MBA, President, Financial Services of America, Inc.; "Zainy Brainy: Design Your Own Brain Out of Clay," led by Danielle Sussan, Rutgers University Graduate School of Education; and "Cry Me A River of DNA," in which students can pull DNA from an onion to see what it looks like, led by Dr. Kristen Shepard, Professor of Biology at Barnard.

More than 150 7th grade girls -- along with parents, teachers and counselors -- have signed up for the conference at Barnard.

The fee for the conference is $10 per attendee, which includes registration, refreshments, pizza lunch and a campus tour after the conference. For more information on "Expanding Your Horizons" visit the website: www.aauw-eyhconference.com or call Wilma Gitchel at 914-332-1064.
