NASA's Chief Scientist to Present NASA: The
New Biology Agenda, Apr. 12
New
York, N.Y. -- NASA's Chief Scientist, Dr. Kathie
L. Olsen, will speak at Barnard College on Thursday,
April 12 at 5 p.m. The lecture, NASA: The New
Biology Agenda, will take place in Lehman
Auditorium in Altschul Hall (117th & Broadway).
Dr.
Olsen, the most senior ranking woman at NASA,
is a senior scientific advisor and its principal
interface with the national and international
scientific community. She is responsible for ensuring
that NASA programs are universally regarded as
scientifically and technologically valid and is
the principal advisor to the Administrator on
the budget of NASA's science programs. Since July,
she has also served as the Acting Associate Administrator
for the Office of Biological and Physical Research.
From
1988 to 1999, Olsen worked at the National Science
Foundation, most recently as senior staff associate
for the Science and Technology Centers in the
Office of Integrative Activities. From February
1996 to November 1997, she served as a Brookings
Institute Legislative Fellow and then as a National
Science Foundation detailee in the office of Senator
Conrad Burns of Montana.
Olsen has published numerous scientific articles
and book chapters. In May 1993, she co-edited
The Development of Sex Differences and Similarities
in Behavior. Among Dr. Olsen's many awards,
are The International Behavioral Neuroscience
Society's Award and The Society for Behavioral
Neuroendocrinology Award in recognition of outstanding
contributions for research and education in the
field. In May, 2000, she received the Barnard
Medal of Distinction, the College's most significant
recognition of individuals for demonstrated excellence
in conduct of their lives and careers.
Professor
Paul E. Hertz, who runs the lecture series, said:
"These lectures allow Barnard students to hear
from highly successful women scientists, both
about the content of their work and how they reached
their influential positions."
Dr.
Olsen's lecture is part of the Distinguished
Women in Science lecture series at Barnard
and is sponsored by The Undergraduate Biological
Sciences Education Program of the Howard Hughes
Medical Institute.
