An Evening of Poetry and Music by a Renowned French
Poet and an Eminent Senegalese Griot, Apr. 11

York, N.Y., -- Leading French poet Josee Lapeyrere
and musician Djeour Cissokho will perform in Sulzberger
Parlor (3rd Floor of Barnard Hall, 117th St. &
Broadway), April 11, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Lapeyrere,
a renowned poet, will read a selection of her
work in both French and English. She has written
five books and appeared in many poetry magazines
in America, France, and South America, including
Action poetique, El diario de poesia, and
The Bitter Oleander Review. Additionally,
her work has appeared in numerous anthologies
in France and abroad including L'annee Poetique,
Poesie en France, 29 Femmes -- Une Anthologie,
and Barnard professor Serge Gavronsky's Five
Contemporary French Women Poets.
A
native of Senegal, Cissokho is the most eminent
griot from the famous Cissokho family. He is renowned
for his singing and playing of the kora, a long-necked
harp lute of Western Africa consisting of 21 strings,
a gourd resonator, and a leather-covered sound
board. His music includes elements taken from
jazz, reggae, and salsa. The founder of a musical
group, Allalake, Cissokho has performed all over
Africa and in France. He has numerous albums to
his credit and will release a new CD this spring.
Cissokho will sing traditional Senegalese songs
and accompany himself on the kora during the evening
program.
The event is organized and sponsored by the Barnard
Department of French.
