Please join President Shapiro and The New York Times Editorial Page Editor Gail Collins for a lively discussion about American women and progress on Wednesday, March 31: How Have Two Centuries of Struggle Shaped American Women?

Gail Collins

Judith Shapiro

Carol Berkin

Lynn Sherr

Naomi Wolf

In recognition of Women's History Month, Barnard and The New York Times are jointly presenting this forum on women's progress throughout U.S. history.

A panel of leading thinkers on gender issues and women's advancement will join President Shapiro and Collins, whose latest book, America's Women: Four Hundred Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines (William Morrow 2003), records the transformation of American women's lives through history.

President Shapiro will lead the forum with other panelists to include:

  • Carol Berkin, BC '64, professor of history, Baruch College and The Graduate Center, CUNY
  • Lynn Sherr, correspondent, ABC News "20/20"
  • Naomi Wolf, bestselling author of The Beauty Myth, Fire with Fire and Promiscuities

Questions to be considered:

  • What have American women learned in their historic struggle for equality?
  • Can these lessons be applied to new global partnerships today?
  • Can American women gain new perspective from abroad about social and political progress?

Ideas and trends to be discussed:

  • How the role of women in war, conflict and the military has expanded up to the present, including Iraq War military hero Jessica Lynch and the emergence of women as suicide bombers
  • How childbirth injuries to women came to be understood, prevented or repaired more than a century ago in the United States, while these conditions persist today in the developing world
  • How women throughout our history altered their appearances to reflect culture, religion, tradition and ideals of beauty and how this trend is changing.

The entire Barnard community is invited to the forum, which will take place from 4:30-6 P.M. in Lower Level, Millicent McIntosh Student Center.  Please RSVP in advance: NYTevents@aol.com or call (212) 556-4520.
