President Shapiro noted the "profound and remarkable change" for women over the last several decades and encouraged a wider perspective to overcome what she called "sociological illiteracy" -- the narrowness of views which results from the highly individualized nature of modern living. She also noted that progress never moves in a straight line with a clear endpoint while ongoing societal reforms to advance women's progress offer "steady work."
Collins discussed milestones in progress from her most recent book, America's Women: Four Hundred Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates and Heroines, and stressed the need to "reach out to women in other countries" who have not yet been included in the ongoing "arc of progress" of the feminist cause.
C-Span recorded the discussion and will broadcast it as a program in the future. |
