Book by Barnard Professor Nelson Moe Wins Acclaim in Italy
New York, NY - Nelson Moe, Associate Professor of Italian at Barnard, has received wide critical praise by the Italian press for The View from Vesuvius: Italian Culture and the Southern Question (University of California, 2002).
The Italian translation of Moe's book has been reviewed and discussed in over twenty newspapers and magazines, including such leading publications as Il Corriere della Sera , La Repubblica, La Stampa , and L'Espresso . Italian journalists and critics have praised Moe's study as a work of "great subtlety and depth," and as "one of the best things ever written on the image of the Italian South."
A critic for La Stampa wrote that "Nelson Moe has finally provided us with a scrupulous inventory and precise analysis of the way people have viewed the South in the modern era. His book helps us to understand how the conflict between North and South is not just something of the present, but rather a problem with ancient roots, originating in distant times."
Another reviewer underscored the broader cultural significance of Moe's study: "In a country where racism and the rhetoric of separatism have been rampant for over a decade, Moe's cultural history of the divide between North and South, with its constant attention to the connections between politics and the social imagination, is itself a cultural event of great importance."
"The Southern Question has been one of Italy's great problems since the country was unified in 1860," said Moe. "I am delighted to see that my work is helping Italians to understand a question of abiding national concern."
Moe has written extensively on the 19th and 20th century Italian culture. He was awarded the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione publication award for a manuscript in Italian literary studies by the Modern Language Association for The View from Vesuvius . He has also published articles on a wide range of topics including modern Italian fiction and poetry, Gramsci, feminism, film, and cultural theory.
