Science Students Present Their Research on Tuesday,
April 17
NEW
YORK, N.Y., April 9, 2001 -- Thirteen Barnard
College students will present the results of their
year-long scientific research projects at the
Ninth Annual Student Research Symposium at 4 p.m.,
Tuesday, April 17, in the Ella Weed Room of Milbank
Hall.
All of the students are Research Interns whose
work was sponsored by the Hughes Science Pipeline
Project, which is in turn funded by grants from
the Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education
Program of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Paul
E. Hertz, Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Biological
Sciences, who is director of the project, will
give opening remarks at 4 p.m., followed by 15-minute
presentations by the students.
"These
year-long Research Internships provide our students
with the opportunity to experience nearly every
aspect of scientific research: defining a specific
hypothesis, working out the bugs in an experimental
system, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting
results and conclusions in a public forum," said
Hertz. "The
Student Research Symposium is the culmination
of their fine efforts, and it provides a forum
in which Barnard students and faculty from all
of the natural sciences can meet and describe
how they have spent the past year."
