Two
Barnard Students Receive IIE Freeman-Asia Award to Study
Abroad
New
York, N.Y., April 24, 2002 Two Barnard students,
Maliha Mustafa 04 and Anne Greenleaf 04 have
been offered the prestigious Institute of International
Education (IIE) Freeman-Asia award to supplement their studies
in Asia.
Mustafa will head to Indonesia and take part in the USINDO
Summer Language Studies Program, which is sponsored by the
United States -Indonesia Society. When she returns, she
will work closely with Janet Alperstein, the Study Abroad
Advisor, to hold a panel on studying abroad in East Asian
countries.
Greenleaf is using her award to do an intensive language
study of Mandarin in Kunming, Southwest China. During her
time in China, she will also have to write a research paper
and she plans to study "the political participation
of women who are ethnic minorities, primarily Muslim minorities."
While the number of American students studying abroad is
significantly increasing, many of these students choose
to go to Europe. The Freeman-Asia award supports students
who choose to study in East or Southeast Asia for the summer,
semester, or academic year. When the students return, they
must work to encourage more students at their school to
study abroad in Asia.
