German Education Representatives Visit Barnard for U.S./German/ Belgian International Education Administrators Seminar 2004
New York, NY, May 13, 2004-- Administrators, scholars, and government officials from Germany and Belgium visited Barnard College on May 13 as participants in the annual U.S.-German International Education Administrators Exchange Program (GIEA), a component of the Fulbright Senior Scholar Program.
The half-day seminar at Barnard introduced the European administrators to the unique atmosphere of a U.S. private liberal arts college for women. The three-week program is designed to expose visiting European representatives to a wide range of American higher education institutions, and to introduce them to the methods of American colleagues engaged in international educational exchange.
"Today's program provided an exceptional overview of women's colleges which is uncommon in Europe. The Fulbright scholars gained an understanding of why Barnard is the most highly sought-after women's college in the United States, as well as what the benefits of attending a single-sex school are," said Janet Alperstein, the program's organizer, Assistant Dean and Study Abroad Advisor. "The panel of students who had participated in internships was of great interest to the scholars as this concept does not exist abroad, yet the benefits to students are tremendous."
President Judith Shapiro opened the seminar with an overview of U.S. women's higher education, including the Women's College Coalition. Afterward, Provost and Dean of the Faculty Elizabeth Boylan discussed Barnard's major academic programs. Associate Professor of Environmental Science Martin Stute, Associate Professor of German Erik Grimm, and Associate Professor of Economics Rajiv Sethi represented the College's programs of science, the humanities, and social sciences.
The European representatives attended a panel on student internships, moderated by Cara Smith, Associate Director of Career Development with student contributors Manmeet Bindra '05, Carol Kim '05, Naomi Shatz '04, and Adelle Tilebalieva '05.
The visitors departed Barnard to learn more about other colleges' and universities' international student programs, foreign student advising, and study abroad programs. Contact: Petra Tuomi, Office of Public Affairs, 212-854-7907
