Barnard Alumnae Reunion 2002, May 30-June 2

New York, NY, May 17, 2002—Barnard College’s 2002 Reunion Weekend will take place Thursday, May 30 through Sunday, June 2. Thursday’s early registration runs from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Vagelos Alumnae Center and registration is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday in the lobby of Barnard Hall.

Featured events include an address by President Shapiro, readings by a number of renowned Barnard authors, a report on families with small children living near Ground Zero, and Barnard’s first-ever Reunion Gala, including jazz, cocktails and dinner.

A number of new events have been added to this year’s program, including an alumnae film series (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday), a trip to Broadway, neighborhood tours and family programs. The film series will show Blue Vinyl, a 2002 Sundance Festival award winner co-produced by Julia Parker ’92; Tender Mercies, a 1983 film nominated for five Academy Awards and winner of the Best Actor (Robert Duvall) and Best Original Screenplay (Horton Foote) produced by Philip and Mary-Ann Hobel ’47; Voices From a Locked Room, by Dina DeLuca Chartouni ’82; and clips from the Barnard film archives.

May 30, 7 p.m.: After early registration, Thursday evening offers a trip to Broadway to see Mamma Mia!, The Producers, Oklahoma!, or The Graduate.

May 31, 12:30 p.m.: During the Annual Luncheon and Meeting of the Alumnae Association, a number of awards will be given.

Distinguished Alumnae Awards will be given to Susan Baer ’72, general manager of Newark International and Teterboro Airports, and Dr. Ruth Levy Gottesman ’52, Professor Emerita, Department of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Former Director of Fischer Landau Center for the Treatment of Learning Disabilities.

The Award for Service to Barnard will be given to Ethel Greenfield Booth ’32 and the Young Alumna Award will go to CNN correspondent Deborah Feyerick ’87. Graduate Fellowship Awards will also be presented to Elta Smith ’01, Amy Boutell ’98, Susan Park ’98, Miriam Greenblatt Weidberg ’97 and Katie Graves-Abe ’02.

May 31, 2:30 p.m.
: Guests can choose between a panel discussion and faculty lecture. The panel discussion, titled How can we save public education?, will be moderated by Joyce Purnick ’67, columnist for The New York Times.

The faculty lecture, titled Transforming Urban Spaces, is to be given by Karen Fairbanks, chair of the Barnard/Columbia Department of Architecture and co-principal, Marble Fairbanks Architects.

June 1, 8:45 a.m.: Two neighborhood tours, led by Big Onion Walking Tours, are being offered, one of historic Harlem and another of Morningside Heights. Both tours meet at the Barnard Gates, historic Harlem at 8:45 and Morningside Heights at 9 a.m.

June 1, 10 a.m.: The first of two panel discussions on Saturday, titled Are you getting the full story on homeland security?, will be moderated by Suzanne Bilello ’77, International Consultant on Media and Civil Society Institutions in Latin America.

The faculty lecture, Beyond Mama’s Boy and Daddy’s Little Girl – how children’s relationships with their parents affects their interactions with their peers, will be given by Tovah P. Klein, assistant professor of psychology and director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development. The lecture features a report on families with small children living near Ground Zero.

June 1, 11:15 a.m.: The second panel discussion, So many roles, so little time—how do we juggle life’s demands on us?, will be moderated by Fran Sussner Rogers’67, CEO of WFD (formerly Work/Family Directions).

June 1, 1 p.m.: The new children’s activities will feature Jerry Joy Music, whose program of music, dance, puppetry, storytelling, balloon design, face-painting and mask-making is open to children 3-12 and their parents and care-givers.

June 1, 3 p.m.: Also new this year is the Barnard Literati program, which will include Belva Plain ’37, Anne Bernays ’52, Sigrid Nunez ’72, Tama Janowitz ’77 and Galaxy Craze ’92 reading from their latest works. Books will be available for sale and signing.

June 1, 6 p.m.: The main event of the weekend, the Reunion Gala, features jazz, a performance by Bacchante and cocktails on the Lehman Lawn. After that, will be the Gala Dinner, with remarks by President Shapiro, the presentation of the Woman of Achievement Award to Fran Sussner Rogers and the class gift presentation and awards ceremony.
