Barnard Graduate Adebola Bamiduro '01 to Receive
the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate
Scholarship
New
York, N.Y., May 31, 2001 - Adebola Bamiduro '01,
has received one of the five annual John McLendon
Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarships to
be awarded nationwide. The John McLendon Scholarship
is given to minorities who pursue a postgraduate
degree in athletics administration and have demonstrated
leadership qualities on an institutional or a
community level. Bamiduro competed against 22
nominees for the Award; each of the five recipients
will receive a $10,000 grant to be used toward
postgraduate studies in athletics administration.
Bamiduro, a Dean's list recipient who graduated
from Barnard with a degree in political science,
will receive the award at the 36th Annual Convention
of the National Association of the Collegiate
Directors of Athletics (NACDA), June 10-13, in
Salt Lake City. The NACDA Scholarship Awards Luncheon
will take place on Tuesday, June 12. Leslie Gudel
of ABC Sports will serve as a master of ceremonies.
In
addition to her academic accomplishments, Bamiduro
was the captain of the Barnard/Columbia Athletic
Consortium's lacrosse team this spring and she
competed in lacrosse for four years and field
hockey for a season. She was the Ivy Group Student-Athlete
Advisory Council League Representative to the
NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Bamiduro
served on the national committee as vice chair
and chair.
During
her studies at Barnard, Bamiduro held internships
at the United States Mission to the United Nations
and the NBA. She was also a member of the Barnard
Captain's Council; served as an admissions representative;
and was a participant on the College's admissions
panel. Bamiduro was chosen to be the master of
ceremonies for the 2001 Cristina Teuscher Dinner,
an inaugural banquet in honor of Columbia University's
new Women's Intercollegiate Sports Endowment.
Bamiduro,
a native of Nigeria, plans to seek employment
before pursuing her master's degree in athletics
administration.
