New York Business Names Barnard Trustee Eugene McGrath
as One of the 10 Most Influential Leaders in New York
New
York, N.Y., June 20, 2002 -- In its June 17, 2002, issue,
Crains New York Business named Barnard Trustee Eugene
McGrath as one of the 10 most influential leaders in the
New York City business world.
In order to make the cut for this highly selective list,
an individual had to "use his or her clout to effect
political, civic, or social change, or to effect change
in his or her industry." As Chairman of the Board and
Chief Executive Officer of Consolidated Edison, Inc. of
New York, McGrath has "maintained and improved
one
of the most reliable electricity systems in the world."
Con Ed was highly praised for its quick action after the
Sept. 11th attacks. Electricity was restored to the downtown
area in a matter of weeks, and one of the substations destroyed
in 7 World Trade Center has already been replaced.
In addition to his leadership at Consolidated Edison, McGrath
is involved in numerous educational, civic and philanthropic
organizations, including serving on the Barnard College
Board of Trustees, to which he was elected in 1990 and currently
serves as Vice Chair; he also co-chairs the 14th Street-Union
Square Local Development Corporation; and serves on the
boards of a number of institutions, including the American
Museum of Natural History, the Conference Board, Central
Park Conservancy, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the
Fresh Air Fund, New York City Partnership and Chamber of
Commerce, and the United Way of New York City and the United
Way of Tri-State. In the article, McGrath notes "I
love New York. And that is what drives me."
Also included in Crains list of the top 100 business
leaders are two Barnard alumnae: former Barnard president
Ellen V. Futter 71, president of the American Museum
of Natural History, and Martha Stewart 63, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.
