Statement by Barnard College President Judith Shapiro on the U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Affirmative Action in the Michigan cases:

The Supreme Court recognized the educational benefits that flow from a diverse student body in its rulings today. This is a victory for those of us in higher education who have sought to promote diversity and social justice on our campuses and more generally, across society. The Court has acknowledged what research and experience has taught us: that affirmative action enriches the learning environment and tries to redress the continuing disparity in access to power and responsibility that is related to race and background in our country. The justices today upheld the value of continued efforts to expand these principles at every level of our society.
