Professor of Religion Randall Balmer Quoted in July 1 Edition of Time Magazine

New York, NY June 27, 2002- In the July 1 issue of Time, Barnard professor of religion Randall Balmer is quoted in the article The Bible and the Apocalypse. The article focuses on why so many Americans are discussing the end of the world.

In a time of such uncertainty, it is not surprising that the American public has fears that the world might be coming to an end. However, we are not the first nation to fear this. Others before us have rationed how the end would come and what role each nation would play in the end. With each theory of the ending of the world, there was also an evangelist behind it. The most prominent ones include John of Patmos in 95 A.D. and John Nelson Darby in 1862.

Balmer, an author of several books on Evangelicals, calls Darby’s book "a theology of despair." He also believes that in the past few decades there has actually been a decrease in the amount of end-of-the-world sermons from the pulpit. That is, until the devastation of Sept. 11 brought the subject back to the American people.
