HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS EXPERIENCE NEW
YORK CITY COLLEGE LIFE AT BARNARD COLLEGE
New
York, NY July 21, 2002 For the past 18
summers, Barnard has hosted high school upperclassmen
for its Summer in New York City Pre-College
Program. Every summer, promising high school
juniors and seniors from all over the country
are accepted out of an applicant pool of over
300.
"This
year's Pre-College Program will be the largest
in our eighteen-year history, with more than
200 students attending our five-week and one-week
sessions. Students will be representing 27 states
and 7 foreign countries, including Singapore,
Turkey, and Argentina," says Allison Kimmich,
Director of Pre-College Programs.
Students,
who are about 90 percent female, enroll in a
five-week course program or a one-week mini
course, new in 2002. There is something for
everyone in this program. Students can take
courses taught by Barnard and Columbia faculty
ranging from the creative arts to psychological
sciences.
In
addition to classroom learning, students are
offered many opportunities to visit professional
and community service organizations, allowing
them to explore possible future career options.
Students take tours through these offices and
hold question-and-answer sessions with employees.
Pre-college participants have taken professional
tours at NBC, New York State Supreme Court,
Seventeen magazine, The United Nations,
Putumayo World Music, and Coalition for the
Homeless, to name a few.
Since
the goal of the program is to give its participants
a well-rounded view of college life in the city,
there are a number of extracurricular activities
for students to take part in. Evening and weekend
activities include Broadway shows, walking tours,
museums, visiting New York landmarks, and much
more.
"While
getting the chance to experience college life,
we've had so much fun here. It has definitely
been a worthwhile experience," says Summer
in the City student, Tara Sattler.
