Barnard
Welcomes the Class of 2005 -- the Most Selective
Class in the College's History
NEW
YORK, N.Y., July 23, 2001 - This Fall, Barnard
College will welcome 541 first-year students from
41 states and 14 countries, comprising the most
selective class in the College's history.
Of the record number of 4,075 who applied this
Winter, 1,344 were accepted under the regular
decision program and 135 under the early decision
program, resulting in the overall record selectivity
rate of 33 percent, compared with 37 percent last
year.
"The
record selectivity is a significant milestone,
but what is even more exciting is the group of
talented individuals behind the numbers," said
Dean of Admissions Jennifer Fondiller. "Over 30
percent of these outstanding women have held leadership
roles, including editors-in-chief of high schools
newspapers and yearbooks, presidents of student
bodies and captains of sports teams. They have
won national dance competitions, received scholarships
from Xerox and other corporations, done independent
science research, and published poetry."
Overall,
applications rose this year by a greater percentage
than the previous three years. For 2001, applications
increased 4 percent to 4,075; in 2000, they increased
1 percent to 3,910; and in 1999, they increased
1 percent to 3,883. The early decision applications
made a record jump to 285, compared to 205 in
2000 and 203 in 1999. Barnard receives more applications
than any other women's college.
Fondiller
also pointed out the record yield this year: "Out
of the 1,344 admitted, 541 students have enrolled
from 41 states and 14 foreign countries, increasing
the yield to 41.3 percent, compared to 39.3 percent
last year, and 38.7 percent in 1999."
The
Class of 2005 boasts other impressive statistics:
an average GPA of 3.84 and a median SAT total
of 1330. The percentage of students from underrepresented
areas in the class rose as well. The percentage
of African-American students in the new class
increased to 7.2 percent, compared with 5.9 percent
in both 2000 and 1999. The percentage of Latina
students in the new class rose to 7.8 percent,
compared with 7.5 percent last year, and 5.4 percent
in 1999.
This
year marked the first year that the College admitted
a select group of GE Science Fellows. Funded by
a grant from the GE Corp., the Science Futures
for Minority Women Program offers financial assistance
and encouragement to women of color to pursue
careers in physics, math or computer science.
Students selected for the program at the time
of admission are offered a summer of training
in science prior to their first year of college,
mentors, new courses, and research internships.
The GE program builds on Barnard's success in
preparing women for careers in the sciences. A
grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
has funded 116 year-long research internships
for Barnard students, as well as faculty, laboratory
renovations, purchase of equipment, and new course
development.
