Suzanne
Trimel Joins Barnard College as VP for Public Affairs
New
York, Aug. 14, 2002 Suzanne Trimel, formerly a senior
media and communications strategist for Columbia University,
has joined the administration of Barnard College as vice
president for public affairs. The appointment was announced
by Barnard President Judith Shapiro.
In her new position, Trimel will work to enhance Barnards
communications strategy and media relations efforts, and
to promote Barnard initiatives and programs at the national
level, while revitalizing publications and the College web
site.
"The broad range of Suzannes experience and her
knowledge of both the media and higher education and its
significant issues make her a splendid addition to the senior
administration of Barnard," said President Shapiro.
"I couldnt be more pleased that someone of her
judgment and collaborative style has joined Barnard as steward
of our communications and media effort."
"I have always been impressed by Barnards substantial
role in advancing womens leadership in so many fields,"
said Trimel. "The more I learn about Barnard, and as
I get to know the College administration, faculty and students,
the more impressed I am. The word unique is so often misapplied
but in Barnards case it is right on target. There
is no other selective liberal arts college that mentors
its students so thoroughly, while offering all of the opportunities
of a major research institution through Columbia and a location
in the worlds greatest city. I am thrilled to be part
of this exceptional community and to help promote its message."
Trimel, who joined Barnard this month, spent a decade as
a senior writer and media strategist in Columbias
Office of Public Affairs. As associate director for media
relations since 1999, she was part of the senior communications
team that developed strategy for signficant developments
at Columbia. By cultivating the media on stories that appealed
to individual journalists interests and their timely
news judgment, Trimel gained attention in influential media
for faculty, research and initiatives in the Arts and Sciences,
engineering, technology, international affairs and other
fields.
During the 1980s, Trimel was a journalist with United
Press International in New York and Washington, D.C., where
she was a supervising editor on national, government and
political coverage and later a correspondent covering economics.
She began her career as a reporter on a daily newspaper,
the New London (Ct.) Day.
A native New Yorker, she is a graduate of the University
of Connecticut.
Trimel succeeds Lucas Held, who left Barnard to become director
of communications for the Wallace-Readers Digest Funds.
