Eight Students Win Study Abroad Scholarships
Eight rising sophomores and juniors received scholarships for study abroad over the summer months or for the fall term, Janet Alperstein, Dean for Study Abroad, has announced.
The number of scholarships, ranging from $2,500 for the summer break to full tuition for a semester, represents the largest ever for the College, part of an ongoing effort to raise Barnard's participation in awards for this purpose, said Alperstein.
Three students received full tuition for study abroad in 2004-2005 from the National Security Education Program David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship. They are Megan Furman '06, who will study in Cameroon on the School for International Training program during the Fall 2004 semester, and Rachel Steinman '06 , who will study in China on the Pitzer College program. In addition, Erin Andew '06, who will head to Mali next spring, is an alternate. There were 181 winners and 96 alternate out of over 860 applicants. Rachel is a biochemistry major and pre-med who will be continuing her study of Chinese. Erin Andrew is an Africa and African Diaspora Studies major. Megan Furman is an English major.
Erin Darnell '06, an astronomy major, received $5,000 from the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Fund, and will spend this academic year at Trinity College in Dublin. Darnell was one of 192 recipients chosen from among 1,276 applicants for the awards.
Five students received Freeman-Asia Scholarships of $5,000 for the fall term or $2,500 for the summer, including Jenna Crouch, Michele Go, Elana Horowitz, and Anna Zheng. All are studying in China, except for Horowitz, who will spend the fall semester in Japan. In addition, Jenna Crouch was honored this past semester as a 4.0 athlete as a member of the crew team. A fifth student received a Freeman award, but was not able to participate.
