Top-Ranked Academically and Multi-Talented
The 554 members of the Class of 2008 represent an enormously diverse, accomplished and academically top-ranked group of young women. The class was chosen from the largest applicant pool in Barnard history (4,380) and only 27 percent were admitted, affirming Barnard's place as the most selective private college for women in the country.
The class also had the highest-ever SAT test scores among an admitted class (median 700 verbal, 680 math) and a median GPA of 3.93.
The enrolled students represent 41 states and 22 foreign countries; 34 percent identify themselves as students of color. Six percent of the students were educated outside of the United States and 4 percent are citizens of countries outside of the U.S. Seven of the students were designated Centennial Scholars and seven are enrolled in the dual degree program with the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Barnard traditionally enrolls students with extraordinary talents and accomplishments and this year's incoming class was no different, including 18 valedictorians, 23 class presidents, a member of the Chicago Youth Synphony, one of the top ten Irish dancers in the world, a Bausch and Lomb Science Award winner, an activist on the issue of child labor, 21 National Merit semi-finalists and one finalist, a Senate Page, a winner of two gold medals in the Russian Olympiad, one of the fastest 400 meter hurdlers in the U.S., and a professional skate boarder.
