ELAYNE GENISHI GARRETT HONORED FOR WORK FOR CAMPUS COMMUNITY

BARNARD GROUP AT ACAA GALA
Elayne Genishi Garrett '64, second from right above, was honored by the ACAA on Sept. 11. At far left is ACAA President Camilla Hsiung '89 and next to her is Barnard Dean of Admissions Jennifer Fondiller '88. To Garrett's right is Pauline Lem '96.

Elayne Genishi Garrett, Senior Associate Director of the Office of Career Development at Barnard College, was honored as a "distinguished contributor" to the Barnard-Columbia community at the Asian Columbia Alumni/ae Association scholarship benefit dinner on September 11.

Garrett, a 1964 graduate of Barnard, was acknowledged for her contributions as past president of ACAA in conjunction with her role at Barnard. During her time as president, she helped to create the first of these scholarship benefit dinners.   Her work with ACAA often intertwined with the programming and work with students and alumnae on their professional lives and work/life choices. Garrett directs two foundation-supported entrepreneurial programs and oversees Barnard's student-run, self-supporting student job agencies, including the Babysitting Service.

A member of the Career Development senior staff, Garrett served on a Curriculum Review Committee that produced Barnard's first multicultural course requirement.   She was among the early co-chairs of the college Committee on Race, Religion, Identity, and Ethnicity.   Garrett holds a Ph.D. in American and European art history from Case Western Reserve University.

Garrett was one of six honorees at the event, who included faculty and graduates of the School of International and Public Affairs, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Columbia College.   Anisa Kamadoli Costa, a Barnard as well as SIPA graduate, was also honored, and these two awards were presented by another Barnard alumna, Camilla Hsiung, current ACAA president.

At the dinner, two Barnard students were among the association's scholarship recipients: Christina Chang BC '08, and Cindy Lee BC '07.

The scholarships provide four-year grants that enhance financial aid packages offered by the undergraduate colleges. To date, 11 students have received scholarships totaling $200,000.
